2021 statistics for fatal accidents at work

We started 2022 fact-based and we intended to continue on that path. For us at Lup Technologies, the first quarter of a new year always means a deep dive into the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s statistics on last year’s fatal accidents. In 2021, 42 people died in fatal accidents at work.

When we look at the statistics for 2021, we can clearly state that the sharp decline of 2020 with 29 reported cases was an exception rather than a positive indication that the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s vision of Zero Vision for fatal accidents at work could become a reality in the foreseeable future.

According to the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s Gustav Sand Kanstrup, project manager for Zero Vision for fatal accidents, there are usually many factors that influence when the outcome of an accident is a death:

“There are often many shortcomings at the same time, shown in our analyzes of the underlying causes [for fatal incidents]. It can be a lack of knowledge and routines, technical errors, someone who is in the wrong place. The systematic work environment work is often insufficient.”

We at Lup Technologies share Gustav’s view and see the connection between a lack of knowledge, and above all a lack of knowledge transfer, and routines as underlying causes. In addition, we are fully convinced that the systematic work environment work is an important step in overcoming this serious problem in the long run.
